Raanjhanaa is a 2014 Indian film written and directed by Anand L. Rai and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and Viacom 18. It stars Dhanush in the lead role, supported by Sonam Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Abhimanyu Singh, Andrea Tariangi and Nassar. The film tells the story of how love impacts an individual's self-esteem and self-confidence. Raanjhanaa was released on 10 July 2014 to positive reviews from critics who praised the performances of actors in the lead roles; its screenplay; cinematography; soundtrack composed by A.R Rahman; production design; editing; and special effects. The film was a commercial success and grossed at the box office. A narration, by writer and director Anand L. Rai, is about love and its importance in one's life. He states that we can never think of our life without love and it has many meanings for different people in different contexts. He also explains the whole thing with the help of a short story where he narrates about a young man (Dhanush), who is in search of his true love (Sonam Kapoor) who is engaged to someone else (Abhimanyu Singh). The film is set in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It is the story of love between an aspiring runner (Dhanush) and his college crush (Sonam Kapoor). Dhanush falls in love with Sonam, but she rejects him. A flashback is shown later on showing that Sonam is already engaged to someone else, however she has fallen in love with Dhanush. He reciprocates her feelings but is unable to confess it because of his fear of ruining her life. She does not understand what he feels because he never reveals his feelings. The film ends with both the characters leaving Varanasi without meeting each other.
The film was shot at various locations in and around Varanasi and its surroundings. The first schedule of the film was shot in the 'Diwali' (Festival) season and later on two schedules were shot during winter, 2012. The first schedule was shot at various locations around Varanasi, such as Manikarnika Ghat, Haat at Pandit Nehru Park and various other temple locations such as Vaishnav Ghat. The second schedule was mainly shot in the Kyonnagar area of Kolkata and in Delhi. The film marks A.R. Rahman's return to Hindi cinema after five years following his much-talked about retirement from film composing and direction in 2011 and his subsequent return for a special song composed for "Ghajini" (2008). The film was written by Anand L. Rai, who has also penned the screenplay, while dialogues were written by Gaurav Varma based on Maanikya Sahani's short story, which appeared in "Monsoon". Rai had earlier made an unsuccessful attempt at making a three-film collaboration with Rahman, which was stalled due to delays.
